Staying Late

I would love to humbly admit that I’m the teacher who stays late, tirelessly correcting childrens’ papers, improving lesson plans and color-coordinating schedules… but we all know I’m the guy in the Spider-man pajamas.

It brings up an interesting arguement, though: At what point do you cross over from a Great Teacher to The Teacher Who Stays At Work Too Long?

Laptop Glee

balloonSo you won’t be seeing a new comic this week because I JUST got a new laptop! This is very exciting for me. I’ve been using my PC for at least 8 years now. I don’t know how I survived. The ENTIRE hard drive was only 60GB. The processor was … get this… 516 KB. Crazy, right? Now I gots me a SWEET new dell. I just finished transferring all my files and programs this afternoon and although I COULD try to spit out a new comic in the next few hours, I’m not going to. Hey, it’s my birthday tomorrow. I’m taking a break.

Anyone have some suggestions for some cool programs I should put on my laptop? What programs or apps do YOU use that you can’t live without?

New Direction

balloonI was talking to my other lover Ben about my comic and we were discussing how with a comic that is only updated once a week, continuity between comics isn’t as important. And after posting last week’s comic about the teachers’ meeting, I realized how much fun it is for me to do one BIG comic. Actually, even though that comic was five times bigger than my regular comic, it took even less time to draw. I was so excited about drawing it, it took no time at all. I wanted to keep that “Sunday Comic” feel going (as my AP called it) and I ended up putting together this comic in just one day (practically).

I also realized how much more fun it is to spotlight my own experiences than it is to create this fantasy story arc about field trips or other such nonsense. That’s why it was so hard for me to write: It wasn’t me. This comic is me.

It’s sad, but true.

Podcasts

balloonMan, I’ve been busy. The school orientation completely wiped me out even though it only lasted for three days. I feel like I’ve been running around Brooklyn nonstop for the last week trying to take care of various chores. My iPod has been getting alot of use lately and so, I’m in need of more podcast time. Car Talk, Wait Wait, Savage Lovecast and You Look Nice Today aren’t being updated quick enough. Anyone have any good ideas?

Oh and speaking of which, Meech just got tickets for us to see Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me in NYC!  SQUEE!

Orientation

apple2Going back to work today! The 6th graders (and new 7th graders) have Orientation this morning. Then I’ll be sticking around this afternoon to start getting my room organized. I’m going to spend the entire morning just trying to memorize names. I’ve never been in one school this long before. Typically after I learn a year’s worth of names, I’d move on to a new school. I always wondered how teachers could remember students’ names five, ten, twenty years later. Especially if the student was a GOOD student. The good students’ names take the longest to learn cause you never call on them! Then again… all my teachers still remember my name… hmm…

Union of Webcomics

balloonI belong to a few webcomic forums and recently I stumbled across a comic I thoroughly enjoyed. It’s a photocomic about superheroes in Germany whose adventures take place in a parallel Earth. And it is REALLY well done. I was going to just look at a couple pages and ended up reading through almost the entire archive.  I told Arne, one of the creators how much I enjoyed it and he asked for a link exchange. So, on the right, you’ll find his website added and on his site, you’ll find my banner. Ladies and Keysters, I invite all of you to check out Union of Heroes!
